Residual effect of natural and synthetic zinc chelates on zinc in a soil solution of a waterlogged acidic soil. Evolution of the pH and redox potential.

Zinc chelates have been widely used to correct deficiencies in this micronutrient in different soil types and under different moisture conditions. The aging of the metal in soil could cause a change in its availability. Over time the most labile forms of Zn could decrease in activity and extractability and change to more stable forms. Various soil parameters, such as redox conditions, time, soil type and moisture conditions, affect the aging process and modify the solubility of the metal. In general, redox conditions influence pH and also the chemical forms dissolved in the soil solution. Soil pH also affects Zn solubility; at high pH values, most of the Zn is present in forms that are not bioavailable to plants. Neural activity control of neural stem cells and SVZ niche response to brain injury

Patricia Paez-Gonzalez Kuo Lab, Dept. of Cell Biology, Duke University Medical Center, NC,USA. Date: 11/16/2014 Utilizing stem cells in the adult brain hold great promise for regenerative medicine. Harnessing ability of adult neural stem cells (NSCs) to generate new neurons or other types of brain cells may provide much needed therapies for patients suffering from brain injuries or neuro-degenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s, Scizophrenia, or Alzheimer’s disease. However, the treatments that involve stem cells are based in NSC transplantation and its efficiency is really low. The major barriers-to-progress in this area of research are immune-rejection of the implanted cells, faulty tumorogenic growth, but mainly, a faulty integration of the improper progeny. To avoid the problems that accompany NSC transplantation, we wanted to explore whether a new approach focused on “modulating” the brain’s own resident stem cells to produce the appropriate cells after brain damage was possible. In order to determine if “in situ” stem cell therapy was plausible, we first had to determine whether 1) Environment provides the right signals for the proper NSC function and generation of the appropriate progeny, 2) whether in vivo NCSs are capable to elaborate an appropriate response under different brain requirements, and 3) whether directed modulation of Neural Stem Cells function is possible. We found that using genetic alteration in only the neighboring ependymal cells has the profound impact of nearly eliminating new neuron production in the lateral ventricular neurogenic region. Secondly, we determined that cortical strokes that do not impact the neurogenic region induce production on TSP4+ astrocytes that migrate to the injury site to produce the scar that stops cortical bleeding. Thirdly, we have identified a novel cholinergic circuit that resides in the neurogenic region, and that optogenetic stimulation or silencing of acetylcholine neurons can robustly up or down-regulate new neuron production. These three discoveries have met the required conditions for using intrinsic NSCs as therapy for brain regeneration and repair. I am now extending this line of research to determine if this therapy is now a feasible technique for brain repair understanding how the local brain circuits are modified as the NSCs transition to an injury response and back to normal production following recovery. Together these data suggest that therapies utilizing the bodies own intrinsic control mechanisms for NSC regulation may soon provide much needed avenues for future therapies that are unattainable with other methods.Universidad de Málaga. Percepciones de la Sierra Maestra. La visión de la insurrección cubana (1957-1958) a través de los periodistas latinoamericanos

La insurrección cubana tuvo una abrumadora cobertura de prensa desde los primeros compases del levantamiento en contra del gobierno de Batista, que condicionaría en parte las oportunidades políticas y las estructuras de movilización concurrentes en el conflicto. El trabajo realizado por los primeros hombres de la prensa, fundamentalmente estadounidenses, que se entrevistaron con los líderes rebeldes cubanos sirvió como reclamo a otros muchos periodistas interesados en comprobar in situ el devenir de los acontecimientos. Ese fue el caso de los reporteros llegados desde varios países latinoamericanos, atraídos por el ideario de liberación propugnado desde las montañas cubanas. Periodistas provenientes de Ecuador, Argentina, México, Uruguay y Venezuela difundieron al resto del continente sus pareceres sobre lo que estaba aconteciendo en Cuba, ofreciendo una visión personal de un proceso que marcaría el devenir sudamericano a partir de la década de los sesenta.The Cuban insurrection had an overwhelming press coverage from the early stages of the uprising against the Batista government, which would determine in part the political opportunities and structures of mobilization concurrent in the conflict. The work done by the first men of the press, mainly Americans, served as a lure to many journalists interested in checking in situ the course of the events. That was the case of the reporters who came from several Latin American countries, attracted by the ideas of liberation coming from the Cuban mountains. Journalists from Ecuador, Argentina, Mexico, Uruguay and Venezuela spread to the rest of the continent their views on what was happening in Cuba, offering a personal view of a process that would mark the Latinamerican evolution from the sixties

“Hieroglyphics and enterprises” in the Sevillian monstrance of Juan de Arfe

Tras la custodia de la catedral de Ávila (1564-1571), Juan de Arfe realiza su obra más importante la de Sevilla (1580-1587). En ella introduce una serie de “hieroglificos” que él mismo explica, al dictado del creador del programa iconográfico, el canónigo de la catedral Francisco Pacheco, en Descripción de la traza y ornato de la custodia de plata de la Sancta Iglesia de Sevilla. Sin embargo, el estudio pormenorizado de la obra realizada arroja algunas diferencias respecto al texto. En este estudio se analizan esas divergencias, y las fuentes en las que se basa, junto a su significado dentro del conjunto. Además, se comparan con las empresas que realiza para su otra custodia importante, la de Valladolid (1587-1590).Juan de Arfe performs his most important work, the monstrance of the Cathedral of Seville, between 1580-1587, following finish the monstrance of Avila (1564-1571). In it introduces “hieroglyphics”, that he explains in Descripción de la traza y ornato de la custodia de plata de la Sancta Iglesia de Sevilla, under the directions of the iconographic program, Francisco Pacheco. However, the detailed study shows some differences. In this study we analyze these differences, the sources and the meaning of the hieroglyphics. Also we compare it with his other important monstrance, Valladolid (1587-1590)
